I went to bed early last night, and began my channel surfing - and (my wretched old hands) stopped on Faux Noise! I can't give you the names of the three individuals on the panel, but the discussion was about "firing Kevin Jennings, the Obama appointed 'czar."
The black gentleman was a pastor as far as I could tell, and he was the antithesis of the vile shite coming from Hannity and the other two rethugs. There was a mouthy young female, and a former Pentagon person who wrote a book. Let me set the stage here for those who might not know about Kevin Jennings.
Mr. Jennings has been apointed as the Assistant Deputy Secretary to the head of the office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, at the Education department. What a mouthful - see why the word "czar" is much easier??
Kevin Jennings is a Harvard graduate and he founded the GLSEN - Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, in Boston in 1990. This organization was founded to end the harrassment and bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Sounds like a worthy and beneficial organization to me!
Twenty-one (21) years ago, just out of college, Jennings was a 24 year old teacher, faced with a situation involving a student. A SIXTEEN year old boy confided in Mr. Jennings that he had gone home with an older man, and had sex. Mr. Jennings expressed his hopes that the boy had used a condom, but he made no reports to the police or other agencies at the time.
One must note that the age of consent in Massachussetts at the time was SIXTEEN. therefore, he was not obligated to make any reports, and this student was only making a confidential statement, he was not reporting a rape. Hannity and his ilk on this show, insist on stating that this was a FIFTEEN year old boy, and Jennings should be fired from his current position because he didn't report this statutory rape - 21 years ago.
Ask any teacher, how prepared were you to handle "gay" issues in the school, that many years ago? Most will tell you that there was no criteria at that time, and in-service never prepared teachers how to handle situations such as this.
Methinks, that Hannity and his two cohorts, desire to see this man removed from his position - BECAUSE HE IS GAY!! The black pastor told them much the same thing - and he then became a target of their vitriol. We have all made stupid mistakes in our youth, and that is exactly what Mr. Jennings was so many years ago - a young adult, virtually new in the academic forum. In his book, where this issue was first reported, he also maintains that he was friends with this young man for many years afterwards.
Considering the White House has actually called out Faux for all their lies and distortions of late - this is another prime example of why they should be chastised!
Sean Hannity, the two college drop-out, presumes to be smarter than anyone, yet has only mastered the art of "talking over" everyone. He mentored Hal Turner, the white supremicist talk radio host, who was arrested for threatening judges - and dares to say he is not a racist. I think it is about time to go after the advertisers of his show - the threatened boycott of Beck's advertisers worked well - it could work as well again! By the way, aren't we all still waiting for this fukhead to be "waterboarded", since he said it wasn't torture???? Any time now Sean - I will pour the water......

Since I was of legal consent at the time, the fifteen-minute conversation I had with Mr. Jennings twenty-one years ago is of nobody's concern but his and mine. However, since the Republican noise machine is so concerned about my "well-being" and that of America's students, they'll be relieved to know that I was not "inducted" into homosexuality, assaulted, raped, or sold into sexual slavery.
I support Keevin Jennings and the good work he is doing!!!

In 1988, I had taken a bus home for the weekend, and on the return trip met someone who was also gay. The next day, I had a conversation with Mr. Jennings about it. I had no sexual contact with anybody at the time, though I was entirely legally free to do so. I was a sixteen year-old going through something most of us have experienced: adolescence. I find it regrettable that the people who have the compassion and integrity to protect our nation's students are themselves in need of protection from homophobic smear attacks. Were it not for Mr. Jennings' courage and concern for my well-being at that time in my life, I doubt I'd be the proud gay man that I am today.

In Jennings' case, the accusations have turned out to be bogus. The boy was 16, the age of consent in Massachusetts. As with Mark Foley a couple of years ago, the adult was legally untouchable. It appears he was also unreachable, having been an anonymous one night stand. Jennings was concerned that the boy had not used a condom. The despondent boy told him his life was not worth saving. Jennings objected and they argued. The young fellow left a bit happier.
Conservative Christians, who believe they possess an exemption from the 9th Commandment, have falsely accused Jennings, changing the age from 16 to 15.
